The overall objectives of the International Study Group (ISG) are to review the extent to which Africa's current mining regimes promote sustainable development of the mining sector, including artisanal and small-scale mining as well as the broad national and regional economy, and to propose key elements for future change in the form of templates, toolkits and guidelines to formulate the next generation of Africa's mining regimes.

BACKGROUND : The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the African Development Bank (AfDB) jointly organised the Big Table on Managing Africa's Natural Resources for Growth and Poverty Reduction, in Addis Ababa on the 1st of  February 2007. A report on the proceedings can be found at the following link : Big Table Report

Amongst the actions agreed at the Big Table meeting was the establishment of a study group to review Africa's mining codes. The inception meeting of the ISG was held in Addis Ababa from 4-6 October 2007. The report of the meeting, which incorporates the Terms of Reference of the ISG, can be found at the following link: ISG Inception Meeting Report

An e-discussion forum is intended to be an important mechanism for contributing to the objectives of the ISG and for creating a network of persons able and willing to participate in discussions of the issues underlying the project.
