ECA Library has transformed from a traditional depository library into a dynamic knowledge hub for ECA and the wider UN community.
This presentation outlines how the ECA Library has transformed from a traditional depository library into a dynamic knowledge hub for ECA and the wider UN community. Beginning with historic photos, it reflects on the library’s early identity and shows how today’s mandate has expanded in response to new global expectations.
The core idea is simple: access to information is not just a development outcome but a development catalyst. The Library now contributes directly to the SDGs by offering knowledge, technology, learning opportunities, and a safe space for research, innovation, and dialogue.

Four drivers accelerated this shift: global trends toward human-centred knowledge networks, rapid digital change, the rise of multidisciplinary teams, and UN reforms emphasizing transparency and collaboration. In response, KMSS grounded its transformation on strategic principles that link people, place, and platform, repositioning the library as a strategic resource for ECA’s think-tank role.
The transformation is captured through four dimensions: functions aligned with SDGs, increased budget through project-based integration, redesigned hybrid spaces, and an expanded service portfolio. The presentation highlights key functions, such as research support, knowledge platforms, knowledge fairs, exhibitions, book talks, Modeling UN, cultural events, and the Africa Hall Exhibition.
Looking ahead, priorities include completing Phase II of the redesign, launching new services, strengthening the Library’s role as a regional knowledge hub, knowledge mainstreaming, and contributing to UN80 through new partnerships.
The message is clear – ECA Library has moved beyond shelves to become a living knowledge space.
